Several hands went up, and many important things were suggested such as food, matches, etc. Then Santa in the back eagerly raised his hand. “Yes Santa, what are the three most important things you would bring with you?” Santa replied: “A compass, a canteen of water, and a deck of cards.” “Why’s that Santa ?” “Well,” answered Santa, “the compass is to find the right direction, the water is to prevent dehydration…” “And what about the deck of cards?” asked trainer impatiently. “Well, Sir, as soon as you start playing Solitaire, someone is bound to come up behind you and say, “Put that red nine on top of that black ten!”

Tri Peaks Solitaire Card Game Rules

Tri-Peaks Solitaire Card Game is a combination of Golf Solitaire and Egyptian Pyramid solitaire. It’s another fast paced game like Golf but a little less mechanical with slightly more thought and vision required in order to release the most productive cards. Now, let’s check Tri Peaks solitaire rules.

Card Layout

The game is played with a single pack of 52 playing cards. The cards are dealt to form a tableau consisting of three overlapping peaks in the arrangement shown below. A single card is then dealt face up from the remaining stock to start a waste pile that is built on during the game.

Tri-Peaks Card Layout

Objective

The object of TriPeaks Solitaire is to transfer all the cards from the tableau to the waste pile, uncovering cards further up the peaks, making them available for play. You win the game when you’ve removed all the cards from the tableau to the waste pile, demolishing the three peaks.

Tri-Peaks Rules

All building is carried out on the single waste pile. Any completely uncovered card in the tableau may be moved to the waste pile if it follows either an ascending or descending sequence regardless of suit. So in the above example, either the 6, the 6 or the 8 may be built on the 7. Sequences may turn the corner with Kings building on Aces and Aces building on Kings. When no more cards can be transferred from the tableau to the waste pile, a card from the stock is dealt to the waste pile and building resumes. When the stock is exhausted, and no more building can occur, then the game is over. You’ll receive a bonus every time you completely demolish one of the three peaks and you’ll also receive a bonus for each card that remains in the tableau when you win the game, along with another bonus depending on how fast you completed the game. Don’t forget, you can double click or right click on a card to send it flying to the waste pile.

Beside classic Tri Peaks Solitaire, there is other version, that’s Tri Peaks Strict.

The purpose of Solitaire on Windows

Many an office worker has quietly finished a round of computer solitaire. Although seemingly a waste of time, this game actually had a secret purpose.

An long article from Slate magazine about the addictive nature of the electronic pasttime also explains its origin:

Microsoft executives wanted Windows Solitaire games “to soothe people intimidated by the operating system.” Solitaire proved particularly useful in teaching neophytes how to use the mouse. When Microsoft first preloaded solitaire as part of 1990’s Windows 3.0, clicking and pointing weren’t yet second nature. By dragging and dropping cards, newbies developed the mousing fluency required to use every other Windows program. (The game’s pedagogical elements were also a handy cover story. When a Minnesota state legislator got caught playing during a 1995 debate on education funding, she claimed she was merely doing “homework to improve her mouse dexterity.”)

Solitaire helped acquaint users with Windows.

You thought you were burning away years of your life pointing, clicking and dragging. But in truth, you were training. You were mastering how to use the mouse in an era where most people thought “scrollwork” was what artisans did when carving tiny designs into ivory.

Failure is the secret to success. Like The Karate Kid, computer solitaire was a version of “wax on, wax off” that taught us all skills we didn’t know we needed. But in this case, the sneaky trick was seemingly less productive and lots more fun. Sometimes, we need to be tricked in order to master a new technique. Sometimes, there’s a secret purpose to something innocuous. Sometimes, we need to do what seems like wasting time in order to save time later.
